The bastion of Saint Remy, one of the most iconic monumental structures in Cagliari, connects the Villanova district with the fortified Castello district, in the heart of the historic center. It takes its name from the Baron of Saint Remy, the first Piedmontese viceroy.

The Elephant Tower, built in 1307, is one of the symbols of medieval Cagliari and marks the entrance to the Castello district. One of its distinctive features is the sculpture of a small elephant on the south side, from which the name derives.

Completed in 1305, the Tower of San Pancrazio, with its sturdy limestone walls, narrow loopholes and heavy portcullis, protected the northern side of the Castle. Situated about one hundred metres above sea level and developed on four floors, it reached a height of over thirty-six metres, representing an excellent observation point against possible attacks both from the sea and from the hinterland.
